ALLEY SHOP & gallery
In 2022 I turned a small room tucked away in an alley into a pop-up shop and gallery for local artists in Evanston IL.
I was afforded this space in the back of my parent’s cabinetry showroom for free, which allowed me to explore radical business models. Being a craftsperson who was selling my work in small batches I understood how hard it was to make a living that way. Trapdoor, for a brief time, served as a way for me to explore, build community through sourcing handmade craft, create space for local artists I knew to take over the space for month-long exhibits. In addition to the small room artists built site-specific pieces for a mini 7” x 7” x 7” window gallery on Chicago Ave.
The shop and gallery operated on a 20/80 consignment model which allowed me to fund the gallery practice and promote the space. It was a lot of fun and taught me what its like on the other side of selling.
Below is an archive of some of the things that happened in the space, while it lasted.
March 2022, Max Li: The Eight Excuses For Not Coming
April 2022, Tatiana Sky: The Earth is Moving But I Can't Feel the Ground
